Many of us, particularly meat eaters, suffer from a mild form of acidosis - and figs are one of the most alkaline foods there is. I'm not sure that these figs poached in red wine will serve that well in relieving the symptoms of acidosis, but they are certainly not bad for you and, served with goat's cheese, oatcakes and strawberries, make a perfect end to dinner.
Place the figs, cinnamon sticks, orange peel, orange zest and maple syrup in a saucepan and pour over enough red wine to cover the figs. Slowly bring to a boil then reduce the heat to a simmer. very slowly poach the figs for 1 - 1 1/2 hours until they have absorbed the wine and are soft and surrounded by a thick syrup.
Serve in a bowl, with the soft goat's cheese, strawberries and oatcakes on the side.
