A breakfast of porridge made with steel cut oats will sustain your body and brain throughout the morning and nourish you with nutrients including calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc and antioxidants vitamin E and selenium. Steel cut oats take a long time to cook which is a problem easily solved when you cook them overnight in a slow cooker.
Place all the ingredients in the slow cooker and switch the machine on to low before going to bed.
In the morning before serving, stir the porridge thoroughly.
Serve with chopped nuts, a tablespoon of flaxseed oil and either low fat milk or yoghurt (omit the latter if doing dairy free).
