If you're looking for a meat free alternative to tofu and tempeh, look no further than the jackfruit. Unripe its flesh can be compared to pulled pork or chicken. The jackfruit tree belongs to the fig, mulberry, and breadfruit family and originated in Southwest India and is particularly popular in Sri Lanka. It's the largest tree fruit in the world with fruits reaching up to 40 kg. Ripe jack fruit smells rather awful but unripe it is bland in flavour and smell. Unripe it can assume the flavour of strong sauces such as curry and is therefore a perfect vegan alternative to meat.
Jack fruit is a good source of nutrition providing fibre, protein. It is particularly rick in magnesium and potassium.
