Oats - Coarse
Coarse oats or steel cut oats are roughly cut groats (the whole grain) They are the result of little processing and consequently are an excellent source of fibre. Coarse oats are used to make real Scottish porridge and traditional oatcakes.

Coarse oats are relatively hard to find in Australia (but are in every store in Scotland!). Look for them in health food stores.
To Store:
Store in airtight containers in a cool, dry cupboard or in the fridge. Coarse oats will keep for up to three months or longer if stored properly.
Tips & Tricks:
Traditional porridge oats involves soaking the grain overnight and cooking in water and salt (a pinch) for up to 45 minutes. Make it easier for yourself buy making them overnight in a slow cooker ready for the next morning.
Cooking Tips:
Sweeten porridge oats with fruit and fruit concentrate rather than brown sugar.
