Wheatgrass juice
Wheatgrass is said to be a miracle food - the grass itself is indigestible (humans would need two stomachs like cows to digest the cellulose from the grass) so we drink the juice instead. Young stems of wheatgrass are fed through a special wheatgrass juicer to make very dark green, slightly sweet-tasting wheat grass juice. One 30 ml shot of wheat grass is said to hold the same amount of nutrients as 2kg green leafy vegetables.
Category: Drink
In Season: all year
To Buy:
Buy from health food stores or grow your own wheatgrass and get a juicer. Ensure you buy from a shop with a high turnover - if the wheatgrass growing in the trays looks a little old and withered go somewhere else.
To Store:
Drink as soon as you've juiced it.
Tips & Tricks:
If you're about to take a longhaul flight - down a wheat grass shot before you board - an extra defence against any germs that may be flying around inside the plane (better still - have one a day for a few days before you leave).
