Easter is a time for gathering with loved ones, sharing good food, and making lasting memories-and the best part is, entertaining over the long weekend doesn't have to be complicated or costly. When you shop in season, you'll not only enjoy food at its peak flavour and freshness, but you'll also find it's one of the most economical ways to entertain.
From Good Friday seafood feasts to laid-back Easter Monday brunches, the local greengrocer is brimming with inspiration to help you serve up something special. Here's how to bring fresh, healthy, and delicious ideas to your table using the best of autumn's bounty.
Good Friday: Fresh & Flavourful Seafood Fare
Good Friday traditionally calls for fish, and autumn produce offers the perfect accompaniments. Impress your guests with a barbecued salmon fillet, topped with a zesty chilli and coriander sauce, and serve it with charred broccolini, sweet cherry tomatoes, and crumbled feta. For a vegetarian option, try cauliflower "steaks" grilled and topped with hummus and ruby-red pomegranate arils-a stunning and satisfying main.
Add a side of sautéed Asian greens (like bok choy or choy sum) with garlic and soy for a speedy, vitamin-rich veggie dish, or prepare a refreshing salad with fennel, orange, and fresh herbs-light, crunchy, and bursting with flavour.
Easter Saturday: Grazing, Roasting & Sharing
Saturday's the perfect day to gather friends and family around a big, rustic table. Think share plates, roasted vegetables, and flavour-packed dips and sides.
Roast eggplant, either whole or halved, then drizzle with yoghurt, herbs, and toasted seeds.
Make a kale salad with roasted chestnuts, pomegranate seeds, and a citrusy dressing for a seasonal twist.
Potatoes, whether baked, smashed, or turned into jacket nachos, are the ultimate crowd-pleaser.
Bring colour to your table with stuffed Fuyu persimmons, or slice them into salads for a touch of sweet crunch. Add bowls of grapes and feijoas for guests to nibble on-they're perfect finger food and taste like little bites of sunshine.
Easter Sunday: Brunch or Lunch Done Beautifully
Whether you're planning a leisurely brunch or a relaxed lunch, Easter Sunday is all about fresh starts and seasonal delights.
Make a Bircher muesli bowl topped with chilled custard apple, banana slices, and a handful of Australian Gold kiwifruit for a nutrient-packed brunch.
Whip up a healthy mandarin and chilli pork tray bake-full of citrus zing and so easy to prepare ahead.
Serve a simple salad of Shepard avocado, herbs, and thinly sliced fennel with crusty bread or barbecued chicken.
Set out hard-boiled eggs, dyed or plain, for a festive touch. Don't forget, your local greengrocer has fresh eggs-including the elusive white ones perfect for egg decorating.
Easter Monday: Keep it Casual
By Monday, it's time to slow down. Think easy meals, outdoor eating, and minimal fuss.
Toss together leftover roasted veggies with some cooked quinoa or couscous, add a drizzle of olive oil, a squeeze of lemon, and a sprinkle of fresh herbs.
Blend up a smoothie with banana, custard apple, and kiwifruit to power you through the last day of the holiday.
Snack on the last of the plums-still hanging in there for the end of the season.
A Few Final Tips
Keep it simple. Seasonal produce shines on its own. Don't overcomplicate it-let the natural flavours lead the way.
Prep ahead where you can. Chop veggies, mix dressings, and marinate proteins in advance so you can spend more time with your guests.
Shop local and in season. It's not only more affordable-it's better for the planet and your plate.
This Easter, fill your table with colour, flavour, and the joy that comes from fresh, wholesome food. With so many delicious fruits and vegetables at their peak, there's never been a better time to cook, share, and enjoy.
Happy Easter
