The broad bean season in Australia is famously short, making it all the more important to seize the opportunity to enjoy these versatile, nutrient-packed legumes. Here's why you should be snapping them up, how to prepare them, and some delicious ideas for your next meal.

The Benefits of Broad Beans
Broad beans, also known as fava beans, are a powerhouse of nutrition. They are packed with:

Fibre: Essential for a healthy digestive system, broad beans are a great source of dietary fibre, helping to keep things moving smoothly.

Protein: A good plant-based protein source, they're perfect for those looking to reduce meat consumption or boost their protein intake.

Vitamins and Minerals: Rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as B vitamins like folate, broad beans support overall health, including immune function and energy production. They also contain essential minerals such as iron, magnesium, and potassium.

Antioxidants: Broad beans are high in antioxidants, which help combat free radicals and reduce inflammation in the body.

Blanching: To remove the tough outer skins, blanch the beans in boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Once done, drain them and immediately plunge them into a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.

Skinning: Once cooled, gently squeeze each bean to pop it out of its skin. This step might be time-consuming, but it's essential for achieving that tender, creamy texture.
